Marseille scored at the start of both halves to secure a place in the French Cup quarter-finals with a scrappy and occasionally heated 3-0 home win over Rennes on Tuesday.

After a turbulent week that saw them exit the Champions League and surrender a two-goal lead against Paris FC in Ligue 1, Marseille settled their nerves almost immediately. In the second minute, Rennes midfielder Quentin Merlin hesitated inside his own penalty area and was dispossessed by Timothy Weah, who fed Amine Gouiri. The striker finished from close range despite a less-than-clean strike.

The opening half was littered with mistakes and fouls, with little quality from either side. However, Marseille struck again almost instantly after the restart, needing just 31 seconds to double their advantage.

Breaking quickly from midfield, Gouiri released Mason Greenwood down an unguarded inside-right channel. The English forward drove into the box and calmly placed his finish into the far corner. New Rennes signing Jeremy Jacquet, caught out of position, could only react in frustration at the defensive lapse.

Rennes failed to adjust, and Marseille exploited the same space late on. In the 82nd minute, Greenwood again found himself free on the right and squared the ball for substitute Pierre-Emeric Aubameyang to tap home and seal the result.

The victory sends Marseille into the last eight as they continue their pursuit of a first French Cup triumph since 1989.

Elsewhere in the competition, giant-killers Paris FC, who knocked out holders Paris Saint-Germain, travel to Lorient on Wednesday, while high-flying Lens face Troyes.
